In order to change your name in Minnesota, you need to live in the state for a minimum of six months before filing, file in the county you live in, be at least 18 years of age, and pay the court filing fee. The first thing you need to do is fill out an application, and in some cases, tell a third-party. The application must be signed in front of a Notary. You must then file the papers with the Court and pay the required filing fee or request a fee waiver. Once you have filed you will receive a hearing date to appear before a judge. Two witnesses must appear at the hearing to testify as to the identity of the applicant. If the judge approves the application, they will sign an Order Granting Name change. Therefore, changing your name does require some time and money and you should be sure of your decision to change it before beginning the process.
