What Can You Do About a Fake or Defamatory Online Review?

The first thing I recommend that people do is ask a group of people to report the review as fake or defamatory, or otherwise against the terms of service.

For example, if you have a Google Review from somebody who says they were a customer, but you have no record of that person being a customer, it might be somebody who is angry at you. Maybe it is a competitor; maybe it is somebody who has some other issue with you. Sometimes these things just come across randomly, but you can have a group of people who have Google Accounts report that review as a violation of the Google terms of service. And often, with enough of those reports, Google will just remove that. So that is what I recommend as a first step.

Other options, though, include sending a cease and desist letter to the party involved or bringing legal action so a lawsuit, and naming Google as a party or this other individual as a party.

What Are the Three Steps?

I kind of follow those three steps. Step one, have a number of people report the review as against the terms of service. Step two, is a demand letter or a cease and desist letter. You can see more about that in the description below. And third, you can bring a lawsuit, and it is important that you name both the owner of the review website, like Google, for example. And if you know it, the person who posted the review. If you don’t know that person’s name, often, you can get it after starting the lawsuit against the web hosting platform because then they will share information with you during the course of discovery, and you can learn who that person is, what phone numbers or email addresses they have used, etc.
